Judges Hill
A Storied Austin Home, Reimagined for a Stylish New Era
Perched above Pease Park in one of Austin’s most historic
neighborhoods, this 1920’s Mediterranean-style home has been brought
back to life by a creative couple with serious style and no interest in
playing it safe. After a house fire gutted much of the interior, they
saw not disaster but an opportunity.
Subtle yet impactful changes to the floor plan improve the flow and livability. An existing 1970's rear stair addition was removed, and the home's primary stair was extended down to the newly expanded basement level. Creating a seamless, day to day connection from the existing garage to the main house. What was once a low ceilinged, utilitarian basement was excavated two feet to increase head height and reimagined as a fully functional extension of the home, accommodating family living spaces, support areas for the residence, and office spaces for both clients.
A new addition at the kitchen transforms what was once a small, cramped space into one that supports the rhythms of a modern family. Below, this intervention brings generous amount of natural light into the lower level, creating a bright, flexible office space equally suited for focused work or more relaxed, lounge like atmosphere.
Outside, the limestone façade exudes an old-world elegance, nestled within a lush garden dotted with mature oaks and established flower gardens – a page torn straight out of a storybook. Inside, however, is an entirely new story: warm terracotta flooring, colorful Italian tiles, citron-green walls, and bespoke lighting knitted throughout to both restore and reimagine the interior. Custom cabinetry in soft, creamy whites bring a fresh contrast and a sense of timeless craftsmanship.
This is a home that embraces patina, quirks, and the occasional design detour. Every space is lived-in, layered, and joyfully un-pretentious. A fearless take on restoration, where the past is honored but never tiptoed around – a striking precedence that elegance doesn’t have to be serious, and history doesn’t have to be preserved in amber.
